Ford launched at the Detroit Motor Show the third generation of the compact Focus built on a completely new platform that is shared with the new Ford C-Max and seven other models. In contrast to its predecessor the new Focus comes with more aggressive lines, large front air intakes and headlights that stretch forward into the fenders.

Customers have the choice between the EcoBoost SCTi petrol engines or the Duratorq-TDCi diesel units. All the four cylinder petrol engines are fitted with direct injection and turboloaders that reduce consumption by 20 per cent compared to the previous model, according to Ford.

An electric version of the Ford Focus, which is planned for 2011, will however only be available on the North American market. The Ford Focus, which is scheduled for European markets next year, will be built to the same specifications for all world markets, significantly reducing production costs at the three factories in Michigan in the US, Chongqing in China and in the German city of Saarlouis. Prices have not yet been announced.
